Five Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Plumber

From routine plumbing services to bigger jobs like re-piping and water heater replacement, you want to hire an experienced plumber that will get the work done right the first time.

Thankfully, there are a few ways to know whether you’ve hired a good plumber. Here at GPS Plumbing, we pride ourselves on offering professional services for reasonable prices, but there is no reason to take our word for it. If you would like to make sure you are hiring a plumber you can be sure will do a great job, all you have to do is ask a few simple questions before hiring someone, including:

#1 Can I Have an Estimate for the Job Cost?

If you want an accurate estimate for the cost of the job, it is best for the plumber to visit your home and take an up-close look at the problem in person. While phone estimates may happen in good faith, it’s hard not to be skeptical of their accuracy if a professional hasn’t taken a look at the problem. It is important, however, to get that estimate so you can hold the plumber accountable for a reasonable service fee. No one likes to be surprised by an exorbitant bill.

#2 Who Will Actually Be Doing the Work?

While the owner may come to your house for the estimate, the same person may not do the actual work. Some plumbing businesses use employees or subcontractors to complete the work, so make sure the people scheduled to complete the plumbing job in your home are properly qualified to do so.

#3 Is the Plumber Licensed?

Skill and experience play a big role in the quality of work a plumber can do, but customers should inquire about plumber certification in states that require it. To be certified means having proper training to complete the job professionally, and who doesn’t want that from a plumber?

#4 Are You Bonded and Insured?

Asking this question is about more than just the answer. You should ask to see proof of the plumber’s bonding and insurance because should something go wrong during repairs, the financial responsibility of repairs could fall on the homeowner rather than the plumber who may have accidentally incurred the damage. Protect yourself by making sure the plumber is protected by insurance.

#5 How and When Do You Want Payment?

Every plumbing service works differently in this regard. Many will accept credit cards, but it’s a good to make sure of that beforehand to ensure you have the means to make a payment. Also, some plumbers will want payment immediately upon the completion of the job, while others will just send a bill in the mail. Either way, it’s good to know what they expect.

If you would like to ask us any questions here at GPS Plumbing, we are confident that our answers will be satisfactory as you make a decision about hiring a plumber. The more informed you are in your hiring decision, the happier you’re going to be with the finished job!
