The Different Types of Water Heaters

If you find yourself in need of pricy water heater repair and are considering just buying a new one, or if the time simply has come to replace a water heater that’s seen better days, you may want take a closer look at the available options.

Conventional Storage Tank Water Heater

There is a very good chance that most homes you’ve visited over the course of your life have had a conventional storage tank heater keeping all of the water heated. It literally is an insulated tank of water that heats up and stores the heated fluid until it’s ready to be used. Most often, this is the more affordable option we provide here at GPS Plumbing, and its design is time-tested, as many families have made good use of this style of water heater for decades.

Tankless Water Heater

One shortcoming of a tank water heater, though, is that the hot water can run out. Thanks to modern technology, the tankless heater can provide almost endless heated water due to super-heated coils that fill with water and flash as needed. It’s great for large families who need a lot of hot water at once. They cost more than the tank heaters, but they also are a lot more energy efficient since they only use the hot water they need at the time instead of heating up extra water.

Solar Powered Water Heater

Even more energy-efficient is the solar-powered water heater, which heats up the water through roof-mounted solar panels that soak up the sun’s rays and use that energy to heat the home’s water. Of course, this does rely on sunny days, so having a backup energy plan, such as natural gas or energy, is a good idea if you’d like to have hot water regardless of the weather.

Condensing Water Heater

This system uses mostly the heated exhaust from your home’s natural gas system to heat the water, which then is held in a tank like a conventional heater. This also is an energy efficient option since it reuses energy already being generated in the home. Like with all tank heaters, though, we recommend making sure your tank is large enough to accommodate the size and occupancy of your home.
